Silicon-calcium alloy is an effective deoxidizer and desulfurizer for the production of high-grade steel. Although silicon itself is a powerful deoxidant, calcium is stronger. In addition, calcium and silicon are used to control the shape, size and distribution of oxide and sulphide inclusions, thereby improving the fluidity, processability, ductility and impact properties of products.
Calcium has strong affinity with oxygen, sulfur, hydrogen, nitrogen and carbon in molten steel, so calcium silicate alloy is mainly used for deoxidation, degassing and fixing sulfur in molten steel. The addition of calcium silicate into molten steel produces strong exothermic effect. The change of calcium into calcium vapor in molten steel can produce stirring effect on molten steel, which is beneficial to the floatation of non-metallic inclusions. Non-metallic inclusions with larger particles and easy to float are produced after deoxidation of calcium silicate alloy, and the shape and properties of non-metallic inclusions are also changed. Therefore, silicon-calcium alloy is used to produce clean steel, high quality steel with low oxygen and sulfur content, and special performance steel with very low oxygen and sulfur content. The addition of silicon-calcium alloy can eliminate the nodulation of steel with aluminium as final deoxidizer in ladle nozzle and the blockage of nozzle in tundish of continuous casting steel and ironmaking. In the process of steel refining outside furnace, the content of oxygen and sulfur in steel is reduced to a very low level by using calcium silicate powder or core wire to deoxidize and desulfurize, and the sulfide form in steel can be controlled, and the utilization rate of calcium can be increased at the same time. In the production of cast iron, besides deoxidation and purification, silicon-calcium alloy also plays an inoculating role, which helps to form fine or spherical graphite, makes the graphite in grey cast iron distribute evenly and reduces the tendency of whiteness, and can increase silicon and desulfurization, and improve the quality of cast iron.
