Use of ferrosilicon
(1) Used as a deoxidizer and alloying agent in the steelmaking industry. In order to obtain qualified steel and ensure the quality of steel, deoxidation must be carried out in the later stage of steelmaking. The chemical affinity between silicon and oxygen is very high. Therefore, ferrosilicon is a strong deoxidizer for steelmaking for precipitation and diffusion. Deoxidation. Adding a certain amount of silicon to the steel can significantly improve the strength, hardness and elasticity of the steel, thus smelting structural steel (containing 0.40-1.75% silicon), tool steel (including SiO.30-1.8%), spring steel ( When SiO.40-2.8%) and silicon steel for transformers (2.81-4.8% of silicon) are used, ferrosilicon is also used as an alloying agent. At the same time, improving the shape of inclusions and reducing the content of gas elements in molten steel is an effective new technology for improving steel quality, reducing costs and saving iron. It is especially suitable for deoxidation requirements of continuous casting steel. It has been proved that ferrosilicon not only meets the deoxidation requirements of steelmaking, but also has desulfurization performance and has the advantages of large specific gravity and strong penetrating power.
In addition, in the steel-making industry, the use of ferrosilicon powder at high temperatures can release a large amount of heat, which is often used as a heat generating agent for steel ingot caps to improve the quality and recovery of steel ingots.
(2) Used as an inoculant and spheroidizing agent in the cast iron industry. Cast iron is an important metal material in modern industry. It is cheaper than steel, easy to melt and smelt, has excellent casting properties and much better seismic resistance than steel. In particular, ductile iron has mechanical properties that are at or near the mechanical properties of steel. Adding a certain amount of ferrosilicon to cast iron can prevent the formation of carbides in iron and promote the precipitation and spheroidization of graphite. Therefore, in the production of ductile iron, ferrosilicon is an important inoculant (helping to precipitate graphite) and spheroidizing agent. .
(3) Used as a reducing agent in the production of ferroalloys. Not only is the chemical affinity between silicon and oxygen high, but the high silicon ferrosilicon has a very low carbon content. Therefore, high silicon ferrosilicon (or siliceous alloy) is a commonly used reducing agent in the production of low carbon iron alloys in the iron alloy industry.
(4) 75# ferrosilicon is often used in the high-temperature smelting process of magnesium metal in the Pijiang process magnesium smelting process, replacing the magnesium in CaO.MgO, and consuming about 1.2 tons of ferrosilicon for each ton of metal magnesium produced. It plays a big role in the production of magnesium metal.
(5) Use in other areas. The finely or atomized treated ferrosilicon powder can be used as a suspension phase in the beneficiation industry. It can be used as a coating for welding rods in the electrode manufacturing industry. High silicon ferrosilicon can be used in the chemical industry to manufacture products such as silicones.
Among these applications, the steelmaking industry, the foundry industry and the ferroalloy industry are large users of ferrosilicon. They consume more than 90% of ferrosilicon. Among the various grades of ferrosilicon, 75% ferrosilicon is widely used. In the steelmaking industry, about 3-5 kg of 75% ferrosilicon is consumed for every 1 t of steel produced.
